Functional re-education of orofacial and temporomandibular joint dysfunctions

The orofacial functions of sucking, swallowing, breathing, chewing and phonation develop with maturity. The cause of TMJ disorders may vary, and physiotherapy is considered to be essential in the management of these disorders.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders is a collective term for conditions that affect the TMJ or jaw joint and the muscles around the joint. The symptoms can be treated successfully with physiotherapy and a multidisciplinary approach.

Objectives

Detect and assess orofacial and TMJ functions

Submit clinical reasoning for the treatment of orofacial and temporomandibular joint dysfunctions

Write a treatment proposal

Who is it for?

Graduates in Physiotherapy and 4th year students of the Degree in Physiotherapy

Curriculum

The course is structured in two modules:

  • Functional re-education of orofacial myofunctional disorder
    • Sucking (fetal sucking, postnatal sucking, sucking issues, breastfeeding, somatic symptom disorder, ankyloglossia, lingual frenulum, etc.)
    • Swallowing (immature swallow pattern, swallowing disorders...)
    • Breathing (nasal obstruction, mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome ....)
    • Chewing (chewing problems) - Phonation (disorders of phonation, dysphonia)
    • Malocclusion (bite issues and malocclusion)
  • Temporomandibular joint
    • Jaw kinematics and mandibular morphology
    • Main joint and myofascial pain disorders
    • Clinical examination and treatment

Certificate of attendance

Course participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Attendance to 80% or more of the sessions is required to obtain it.

Anna Montmany: Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Pedagogue. Lecturer in the FCS and co-director of the University Expert Certificate in Maxillofacial Physiotherapy.
