Why choose this master's degree?

Prestige

Headed by three prestigious institutions in the area of family therapy.

Faculty

Both national and international faculty with broad clinical experience.

Basic training

Focused on two axes: direct supervision and development of people and the family therapist.

The Blanquerna (URL) School of Psychology, Education and Sport Sciences specialized in postgraduate training and through the expertise of the School of Family Therapy of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and the Vidal i Barraquer-URL IUSM in couple and family therapy postgraduate training, have joined forces in order to offer training for future family therapists broadly recognized both in Spain and internationally by entities such as the Spanish Federation of Psychotherapists Associations (FEAP), the Spanish Federation of Family Therapy Associations (FEATF), the European Family Therapy Association (EFTA) and the Internacional Association of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis (IACFP). Thus, this master's degree is highly practical and applied.

The synergy between the three institutions presenting this postgraduate training comes naturally through the cooperation between their faculty, who have seen the need and the opportunity to undertake more intense collaborative work adapted to current needs, particularly in terms of the design and structure of university training according to the training proposal of the Bologna Process (European Higher Education Area). Thus, an innovative, up-to-date and open program has been adapted into training that also features other guidance within the field of psychology, contents that have been contrasted throughout years of training family psychotherapists.

Who is it for?

For Graduates in Psychology or Medicine and Surgery, having a postgraduate or master's degree that includes training in psychotherapy, with theoretical and practical content of a minimum duration of one year, is valued. It will be assessed individually on the basis of the education and personal and professional background of graduates, diploma holders or university graduates linked to other university degrees; in turn, they will be informed and guided about the necessary requirements to be accredited as psychotherapists by the FEAP (Spanish Federation of Psychotherapy Associations) and as family therapists by the FEATF (Spanish Federation of Family Therapy Associations).

The only master's degree in Family Therapy in Spain that includes:

350h +

of internship from the systemic model at the School of Family Therapy of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

350 h

of internship from the psychodynamic model at the Vidal i Barraquer-URL University Institute of Mental Health

Internships are conducted at two leading and trailblazing centers in intervention and family therapy: the Family Therapy Unit at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and the University Institute of Mental Health at the Vidal i Barraquer Foundation (FViB). There are a total of 700 internship hours (350 internships hours in couple and family psychotherapy, from the systemic model, and 350 internship hours in couple and family psychotherapy, from the psychodynamic model).

The team at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has upwards of forty years of experience and is a trailblazing unit in the systemic model in Barcelona, and in Europe in general, offering care for couples and families with multiple problems in a public hospital.

The FViB couple and family unit is now fifty years old. The team is an international benchmark in intervention in families and couples from the psychodynamic model.

It blends the experiences in the two centers, enabling the student to develop as well as integrate the various strategies they will learn with the two teams. Thus, the master's degree will foster good growth and professional development in the field of couple and family psychotherapy.

Objectives

  • Carrying out internships in two of the three training institutions of the master's degree, guaranteeing 700 practical hours of family therapy.
  • Undertaking 350 hours of practical training in family therapy under the systemic model and 350 hours in family therapy under the psychodynamic model through observation and supervision of real cases.
  • Acquiring the basic skills to be eligible for the FEAP psychotherapist accreditation.
  • Acquiring the basic skills to be able to carry out prevention and intervention for couples and families.

Master's Degree Thesis

The objective is to evaluate the assimilation of the core skills acquired in the field of family and couple therapy. It consists of the preparation of a research paper that allows the student to demonstrate theoretical and practical assimilation of family and couple therapy. The thesis is carried out during the second year. The subject and objective of the study must be within the field of family and couple therapy based on the systemic or psychodynamic model.

The papers must be developed individually or in pairs following quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodology. Projects must be written in Catalan, Spanish, or English. In any case, the work will have to include a summary in English, Catalan, and Spanish.

The master's thesis is prepared annually during the second academic year. The thesis is supervised by an advisor with a PhD specializing in family and couple therapy.

Follow-up is conducted on a monthly basis. Joint sessions are held in order to organize and structure a research paper following the APA regulations, accompanied by work tutorials in order to be able to conduct a more customized follow-up of the work done.

The assessment comprises two grades, each equivalent to 50% of the final grade. The assigned advisor gives a grade taking into account the continuous follow-up of each paper (during this period, the student must submit three drafts before the final version) and the development of the master's thesis (70% of the final grade).
Presentation and public defense before an examination committee comprising two family and couple psychotherapy professors, neither of whom may be the advisor. The grade will be given by consensus; if there is no consensus, each member of the examination committee will award a grade and the average (25% of the grade) will be awarded.

Stages of the admission process

The admission process for the school's own degree studies is developed in 3 stages:

  1. Pre-enrollment
  2. Admission
  3. Enrollment

Pre-enrollment

Students can pre-enroll online (by accessing Pre-enrollment | Blanquerna or the pre-enrollment option for each course) and also in person at the school.

For online pre-enrollment, you will need to:

  1. Sign up on the unique registration system and create a username (if not previously obtained) and follow the instructions to completion.
  2. Make a payment of €50 (non-refundable fee for pre-enrollment rights and processing) can be made by credit or debit card, through a secure and confidential BBVA process.
  3. Upload the required documentation through the document repository.
  • ID card (both sides) / Passport
  • Curriculum vitae
  • For foreign (non EU) applicants: a certificate issued by the competent authority (University, Embassy, Consulate) attesting that the access studies qualify for admission in the home country.

Admission

Once pre-enrollment has been completed, the candidate will be offered a date for an interview with the degree coordinator, who will assess their suitability and solve any doubts they may have about the course for which they are enrolling. Once the assessment is complete, the student will be informed of the result of the interview and how to enroll, if admitted.

Prior to enrollment, the person concerned must upload the qualifications or the receipt of the university studies completed to the document repository. If these documents are not available, the course may be taken but the qualifications will not be received and, instead, a university extension certificate or diploma will be obtained.

Enrollment

Once the above documentation has been assessed, and when there is a large enough group of pre-enrolled students, each candidate will receive the confirmation and information necessary to enroll. Enrollment implies obtaining a definitive place and will take effect within the deadlines indicated in the confirmation e-mail.

When students enroll, they will have two business days to pay the total cost of enrollment, by bank transfer, credit card or barcode. Studies can be paid in installments, without any interest, by bank transfer (Instructions to send the signed SEPA Document to Blanquerna)

Prices may be updated each academic year. Once enrollment has been formalized, the amount paid will not be refunded under any circumstances. Pre-enrollment and enrollment may remain open up to 15 days before the start of the course, provided places are available.

When a student enrolls, a contract for the provision of teaching services is formalized between the student and the Blanquerna Foundation, which is legally binding from the time of payment. Payment includes the corresponding insurance and, for students under the age of twenty-eight, compulsory academic insurance. If a student declines to take up a place, he/she will lose in full any amount he/she has paid.

The student accepts the rules for the use of computer services established by the Blanquerna Foundation. The student's personal data will be included in an automated file under the responsibility of the Blanquerna Foundation, so that this contract can be maintained and fulfilled. Students should note that their data may also be used to inform them about the future activities of the Foundation, or for the institution to send them publications.

In accordance with the provisions of Organic Law 15/1999 on the protection of personal data, students have the right to access their data to update, rectify or cancel them, or object to their use, by sending a letter, indicating which right they want to exercise.

This section is a summary of the general conditions for enrollment. It is only for guidance and therefore has no contractual value. In the event of any discrepancy, the provisions of the general conditions for enrollment specified in the receipt generated at the time of enrollment will prevail; this receipt formalizes the contract between the student and the Blanquerna Foundation; students can consult it on the intranet whenever they wish.

The School cannot guarantee that a course will be available if the requirement for a minimum number of enrollments is not met. In this case, the amount paid for enrollment and pre-enrollment will be refunded in full.

Foreign students

Applicants who have completed access studies outside Spain must obtain a certificate issued by the relevant body (university, embassy, consulate) confirming that the studies qualify the student in the country of issue to take the master degree or graduate studies.

Students are responsible for having all the official documentation necessary for their stay in Spain while studying at the School. Applicants can ask for a pre-acceptance document attached to the pre-enrollment receipt to initiate applications for visas or scholarships or carry out any other administrative procedure. Under no circumstances does this document guarantee a place if all the access and admission requirements are not met. Once applicants have been accepted and enrollment is complete, they can request a letter of admission from the Academic Secretary, if required, by paying the corresponding fees.
