Lymphedema is defined as an abnormal increase in
protein-rich liquid within the interstitial space due to an alteration in transport capacity
of the lymphatic system, which is manifested by an increase in the volume of the limb or
body region.
Secondary lymphedema is one of the most common complications after
oncological treatments, such as a lymphadenectomy or radiotherapy. It is characterized
by edema, discomfort, joint limitation, sensory alterations, trophic changes and
body image disturbances. Currently, rehabilitation treatments and
physiotherapy play an important role in improving and controlling these edemas.
