The Blanquerna Faculty of Health Sciences and LactApp offer the university expert title in Neonatal and Infant Sucking Disorders, a professional program designed for health professionals working in maternal-child care who wish to improve and deepen their key knowledge to detect alterations in neonatal sucking and swallowing processes within an interdisciplinary framework.

Who is it for?
Graduates in Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Dentistry, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Psychiatry, and Speech Therapy.
Great scope for professional growth
1. Evaluation and intervention in neonatal and infant sucking, swallowing, and dysphagia, acquiring advanced skills to detect and treat functional alterations through speech therapy, both in breastfeeding and the transition to solid foods.
2. Comprehensive physiotherapy approach for infants, working on the orofacial, craniofacial, digestive, and respiratory systems, with special attention to prematurity, postural alterations, primary reflexes, and suck-swallow-breathe coordination.
3. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment from pediatric dentistry, focusing on orofacial development, tongue mobility, ankyloglossia, oral breathing, and their impact on breastfeeding, facial growth, and oral health.
4. Clinical and emotional support for breastfeeding, from nursing, midwifery, and lactation consulting, integrating anatomical, physiological, psychological, and social knowledge, and addressing complex situations such as pain, low milk supply, breastfeeding grief, or therapeutic decisions.
5. Practical and interdisciplinary work in specialized teams, through hands-on practice with speech therapy, physiotherapy, pediatric dentistry, and lactation professionals, preparing you for real clinical practice and proper referral.

Curriculum
Module 1: Anatomical, physiological, and pathological foundations of sucking from a speech therapy perspective (5 ECTS)
- Anatomy and oral alterations of the infant.
- Evaluation and intervention in sucking and swallowing patterns.
- Evaluation and intervention of neonatal dysphagia.
- Assessment of ankyloglossia.
- Practical sessions with the speech therapy team.
Module 2: Anatomical, physiological, and pathological foundations of sucking from a physiotherapy perspective (5 ECTS)
- Suck-swallow-breathe system and primary reflexes.
- Craniofacial and postural alterations affecting breastfeeding.
- Physiotherapy assessment of the orofacial sphere.
- Digestive and respiratory physiotherapy in infants.
- Practical sessions with the physiotherapy team.
Module 3: Anatomical, physiological, and pathological foundations of sucking from a pediatric dentistry perspective (5 ECTS)
- Maxillary/mandibular development and tongue mobility.
- Tongue pathology and swallow-respiration coordination.
- Orofacial development in breastfeeding and prevention of dental problems.
- Practical sessions with the pediatric dentistry team.
Module 4: Anatomical, physiological, and pathological foundations of sucking from nursing, obstetrics, and lactation experts (5 ECTS)
- Anatomy and physiology of the mammary gland.
- Breastfeeding difficulties: clinical, psychological, and social management.
- Support in surgical treatment of the lingual frenulum.
- Interdisciplinary work in breastfeeding.
- Practical sessions with the lactation team.
