The power of women in the XXV Blanquerna Conferences

The power of women in the XXV Blanquerna Conferences

March 8, 2019

From Monday 18 to March 20, we celebrate the XXV Blanquerna Conferences, which on this occasion open a debate on women in the world of communication, international relations and public sector management.

We women, there we are, yes, but how?

It is clear that we are here, yes, but ... how are we? That is to say, what limits and constraints are there to achieving equality with men, and how can we combat gender discrimination in these different fields.

There will be three days of intense activity, which Dra. Dolors Comas d'Argemir, Professor of Social Anthropology and Culture at the Rovira i Virgili Universit, will inaugurate with a conference dedicated to "Women's Revolution in the 21st Century". This conference will be held on Monday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the School (Valldonzella, 12).

During the three days of the Conferences we will talk about everything: about the feminist struggle during the Transition with the photographer Pilar Aymerich and the jurist and political analyst Gemma Calvet. We will talk about the role of women in the world of sports with Eva Ferrer, director of El deporte en femenino, and with Maria Teixidor, director of the FCB. And we will also talk about the empowerment of women in the religious world with the journalist Salima Abdessamie, the Benedictine nun Regina Goberna and former student and founder of the digital magazine Zena Marta Roqueta, among many other guests.

Is feminism funny?

To answer this question and talk about humour and gender, we’ve gathered three women who, in front of the screen, on the radio or in the script room, dedicate themselves to humour in mainstream shows of the Catalan audiovisual spectrum: Elisenda Carod, Júlia Cot i Natza Farré. Do not miss them, on Monday, the 18th at 3pm in the Auditorium.

In addition, the Blanquerna Conferences will pay homage to the photojournalist Joana Biarnés with a round table chaired by Professor Sandra Balsells, with the participation of journalist Jean Michel Bamberger; the representative of his archive, Silvia Omedes, and journalist Jordi Rovira, co-director of the documentary Joana Biarnés, una entre todos.

The writer and independent researcher Patricia Soley-Beltran will lead the closing conference with a talk entitled "Exemplary women”: At the crossroads between what society wants from women, what women want for themselves and who they are, something has been broken. Are we facing the construction of a new model of femininity? Patrícia Soley-Beltran responds.

2018 Best Communicator of the Year Award

After a voting process of the entire academic community, the campaign Familiarizados, by the agency McCann, for the company IKEA, has won the Blanquerna Award for the Best Communicator of 2018 "for its advertising creativity that awakens people’s consciences with a touching idea that invites us to disconnect our mobile phones and enjoy what is really important in life ". The award ceremony will be held on Tuesday at 11am.

That same day Antoni Traveria, professor of the degree in International Relations and of the Master's in International Journalism, will also be awarded in memory, for having dedicated his life to the knowledge of Latin America through the cultural management of Casa Amèrica Catalunya, an institution he led for almost 15 years. The prize will be collected by his widow, Maria Àngels Carnicero, together with the Casa América team.

enlightenedSince 1995, the School of Communication and International Relations (FCRI) of the Ramon Llull University has organized these conferences with the goal of bringing students closer to the professional world through round table discussions and debates in which important individuals from the academic, business or institutional worlds can take part.
