Blanquerna FCRI participates in UNESCO World Press Freedom Day

May 7, 2015

This year, Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations participated in a series of events that were part of UNESCO World Press Freedom Day, held in Riga, Latvia, under the MedMedia project.

On May 2, a side-event took place at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, attended by the Dean of the School, Dr. Josep Maria Carbonell. This event, organized by professors Fabio Del Alisal and Jaume Suau, brought together regulatory agencies, as well as legislative representatives and consultants from the southern part of the Mediterranean, in order to discuss media regulation challenges, present best practices and raise possibilities for cooperation with countries that are currently working on the creation of regulatory agencies. In addition, this event represents the launch of a network of regulatory institutions that MedMedia Project will support in the upcoming years.

In total, the School brought together fourteen delegates from countries of North Africa and the Middle East. Among the key participants there was the Palestinian Acting Minister of Information, Mahmoud Khalifa; the President of the Haute Autorité Indépendante de la Communication Audiovisuelle (Tunisia), Nouri Lajmi; Jamal Eddine Naji, general director of the Haute Autorité de la Communication Audiovisuelle (Morocco); and Abdul-Hadi Mahfouz, President of the National Council of Audiovisual Media (Lebanon).

The School also participated in a parallel session of World Press Freedom Day dedicated to regulatory issues, sustainable self-regulation and professional standards.
