Throughout the week of the Georgetown Global Dialogues, I had the incredible opportunity to share several activities with seven students from Blanquerna and eight students from Georgetown University (four from the Washington campus and four from Doha). We attended a series of panels at the CCCB on topics such as solidarity, modernity, and the geopolitical role of the United States vis-à-vis Europe. What I enjoyed most was that, between sessions, we were able to network not only with the speakers but also with journalists, authors, and academics from around the world who attended the panels. We exchanged ideas and got to know each other in a very open and dynamic way.
Another highlight of the week was the private workshops with scholars and academics. For example, on Wednesday the 5th, we had a private debate with Verónica Gago and Kohei Saito about activism, youth political participation, and protest. It was not only very enriching but also an intimate conversation in which each participant shared their personal experiences with activism. It was fascinating to see how people from different continents perceived things differently, given how diverse our group was.
One of the most interesting activities was the podcast recording we did on Friday the 7th. We brought the Georgetown students to our faculty, and in the radio studios, we recorded a podcast in the style of a radio report. We discussed the panels that had caught our attention the most, shared opinions, and reflected together. For example, we talked about the panel The Turn to the Global South and how, since each of us came from a different country (Ecuador, South Africa, Palestine, and the U.S.), we ended up having a really engaging conversation about how problematic the term “Global South” can be.
During our free time, we showed the students some of Barcelona’s most iconic spots, from having churros with Cacaolat at Granja Viader to a private visit to the Sagrada Família.
This week left me with more than just memories. It gave me a sense of clarity and renewed purpose; it felt like a pause to think about where I stand and how I want to engage with the world. Sharing ideas and experiences with people so different from me reminded me that activism and participation don’t always start with big movements — they often begin with conversations, with the willingness to listen and to be challenged.
