Throughout the PhD program the student will have to take part in a variety of training activities, which should be authorized by the supervisor/tutor.
Research seminars. The aim of the research seminars is to promote quality research and to offer advanced information about specific methodologies, new theoretical trends and tendencies in communication.
Training courses. These are brief, practical sessions which focus on the use of specific applications and information tools: Factiva, Google Academic, Prezi, sound pickup, iPad applications for researchers, etc.
Personal tutorials with the thesis supervisor. The PhD student will have regular tutorial meetings with his or her supervisor. The aim of these meetings is to work together on aspects related to the writing of the doctoral thesis.
Teaching activities. Exceptionally, in duly justified cases and under the supervision of the tutor, PhD students may collaborate in teaching activities, within the limits established by the RD 63/2006, 27 January.
Attending conferences and other scientific meetings. The PhD student will be able to attend conferences, seminars and other scientific meetings within his or her area of specialization, which will be considered as training activities with the consent of the tutor. Attendance at such meetings allows students to associate with researchers, to learn about new research and become familiar with certain forms of scientific communication (presentation of papers, posters, etc). Similarly, it will help students learn how to transmit the knowledge generated to the scientific community.
PhD Day. There will be an annual PhD Day where PhD students will have to formally present the progress of their research to lecturers from the Department of Communication. Each student will have to present the current phase and the progress of their research. Planned date: 12 January 2022
Tripodos Day for scientific articles. Presentation of issue number 51 from the Tripodos dossier. In the afternoon on the same day, there will be a session focusing on methodology of writing impact articles, their indexing and the use of the Mendeley bibliographic citation program. Planned date: 2 February 2022
Course on Applied Statistics. Training sessions on statistics applied to communication (Dr. Ester Almenar and Dr. Irene Cruz). Carried out in English and face-to-face. Dates: 29 March, 1, 5, 8 April 2022.
Protocol for thesis defense. Reserved for doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of writing their thesis and/or who will be defending it shortly. The sessions will prepare candidates regarding protocols to be followed during the defense of a doctoral thesis. Planned date: Spring 2022
“Tribunalets”. Over a period of two days, doctoral candidates who are in the later stages of writing their thesis (and recommended by their directors) will present their work to committees (established according to topics) made up of two members who are not involved in the thesis. Planned date: June 2022
Research placements. Mobility. It is of particular importance in the training of researchers that they spend periods of time at research centers. Students will be encouraged and assisted as far as possible to spend periods at national and international research centers as an aid to writing the doctoral thesis.
Preparation of research papers. As PhD students are encouraged to participate in and present papers at conferences and other types of research meetings, the act of preparing such papers (or other forms of research diffusion such as articles) will be considered as training activities. The PhD student will be supported by the thesis supervisor who will guide the student regarding the approach, structure, necessary preparation time and any other activity related to producing the paper.
Professional activities related to the research. Depending on the nature of the research, periods spent working in companies in the sector related to the doctoral thesis may be recognized as training activities. Activities such as the use of methodologies like participant observation, case studies, etc. may be considered as such.
URL University Master’s Degrees Subjects. On the recommendation of the CAPD and/or the tutor/supervisor, the student may study subjects which form part of the university master’s degrees offered at Blanquerna School of Communication or the School of Psychology, Education and Sport to supplement prior training and if linked to the specific subject matter of the doctoral thesis.
Attending meetings of competitive R+D Projects or incipient research projects. Depending on the subject matter of doctoral theses, PhD students may join research projects and participate in the meetings. This will enable the PhD student to become familiar with the management of research projects, the preparation of reports, compile data and useful resources for the research.
