Who is it for?

The master's degree is intended for graduates in Psychology or degrees approved by the Spanish state. The degrees of Graduate in Psychology and Bachelor in Psychology, issued in the Spanish state prior to the Order CNU/1309/2018, have the necessary requirements in order to access this master's degree and, therefore, cannot be excluded from the selection processes, and they do not require complementary training.

  • Postgraduate/master's degree accreditations (if you have a master's or graduate studies, please include a document certifying it, whether it is a certificate, degree receipt or ongoing record).
  • Accreditation of English level, where available.
  • Academic record (certified or with verification code) of the bachelor's degree in Psychology.
  • Degree or diploma receipt (certified or with verification code) of the bachelor's degree in Psychology.

Once pre-enrollment has been completed, the candidate will be offered a date for an interview with the degree coordinator, who will assess their suitability and solve any queries they may have about the course for which they are enrolling. Motivation, academic transcript and professional experience will be taken into account for the selection of students. Once the assessment is complete, the student will be informed of the result of the admission and what to do to enroll, if admitted.

Prior to enrollment, the person concerned must upload the abovementioned documentation to the document repository:

  • Qualification or receipt of the qualification of the studies that give the student access to the master's degree.
  • Original official academic certificate or certified copy of the bachelor's degree transcript.
  • For foreign applicants: certificate issued by the relevant body (university, embassy, consulate) confirming that the studies qualify the student to undertake master's degree or graduate studies in the country of issue.

The assessment of the application includes the fulfillment of the following requirements to enroll in the master's degree and the following selection criteria:

  • Average grade of the academic record of the bachelor's degree in Psychology (1-5 points): Excellent 5, Good 3, Pass 1
  • Specific training and/or experience in the field of clinical and health psychology (0-2 points)

The preparation for the Master's Degree in General Health Psychology is essential for professional practice in this field in pursuant to the seventh additional provision of the General Public Health Act 33/2011, of October 4. This law establishes the profession of general health psychologist as a regulated profession, the exercise of which requires holding the corresponding official master's degree (Order ECD/1070/2013, of June 12, of Spain's Official State Gazette of June 14, 2013).

The purpose of the master's degree is to train the student in the skill sets stated in the general health psychologist guidelines, with a professional approach that features comprehensive and complete training that seeks to provide specialized knowledge and a reflective perspective on the core aspects that define the profession of the future health professional.

  • To integrate the concept of integral health in accordance with the guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO) into the practice of general health psychology.
  • To gain an understanding of the framework of professional action and current legal regulations with a view to knowing how to apply the foundations of bioethics and critical analysis in clinical information sources in processes of assessment, intervention and referral to the corresponding specialists. Know how to write psychological reports in a manner appropriate for recipients.
  • Have the skills to communicate with the patient, family and caregivers throughout the professional process, starting from the first interview, assessment, intervention and follow-up.
  • Have knowledge of the nature of normal and pathological human behavior as well as the social and biological factors that may affect it.
  • Have knowledge of the biological, psychological and psychosocial factors related to health problems and diseases, especially those related to mental health.
  • Have theory and practical knowledge of assessment and intervention models, in addition to the standard techniques and procedures in addressing health issues.
  • Know how to design, conduct and supervise the psychological assessment process and intervention programs according to the individual and social variables in each case.
  • Know how to develop promotional and educational actions for individual and community psychological health.

  • Acquire, develop and put into practice notions of the concept of comprehensive health, with the biopsychosocial elements, pursuant to the guidelines established by the WHO.
  • Apply the foundations of bioethics and the method of deliberation in professional practice. Demonstrate the skill sets of appropriate interpersonal communication and emotion management in effective interaction with patients, family members and caregivers in the processes of identifying problems, assessment, communicating diagnosis, psychological intervention and follow-up.
  • Critically analyze and use sources of clinical information. Write psychological reports in a manner appropriate for recipients.
  • Know the framework of action of a general health psychologist and know how to refer to the corresponding specialist professional.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the psychological nature of human behavioral disorders. Have an in-depth understanding of the psychosocial factors associated with health problems and illnesses.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of intervention and assessment models in the field of general health psychology, in addition to the techniques and procedures used in this discipline in order to address health problems.

A unique methodology based on personalized learning

According to Royal Decree 1393/2007, graduate studies must provide the student with both basic and sufficient academic training for professional practice and qualify them to continue studying and pursue a master degree. Master degree studies include advanced specialized and multidisciplinary training, the aim of which will be academic and professional specialization or embarking on research activities. Master degrees are required to access PhD studies, which are aimed at providing advanced training in the field of research and lead to preparing a PhD thesis and obtaining a PhD qualification. The master degrees have been adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and are structured in ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System), which make it possible to share a compatible credit system, comparable criteria and methodologies and a duration similar to that of European qualifications, with the aim of facilitating and promoting the mobility and incorporation of students into the European workforce. Master degree studies have a minimum of 60 credits and a maximum of 120 credits. This equates to one to two academic years. ECTS credits are characterized by being student-centered to ensure the student leads their own learning process. Each credit is equivalent to 25 hours of training and is used to count class hours (theoretical and practical), personal study, participation in seminars, assignments, external internships and assessment tests. During an academic year, a student can get a maximum of 60 full-time credits and 30 if they have a part-time job. Curriculum

The curriculum is designed on the basis of the provisions of the regulation of the profession of general health psychologist, and includes basic and specific modules, both of a compulsory nature, an optional module, an internship and the master degree thesis. The degree comprises 90 ECTS credits, which will be gained over a total of three semesters, each of which has a teaching load of 30 ECTS.

In the event that the student undertakes the master's degree part-time, the credits are distributed as follows:

  • Basic skills of psychologists (7 ECTS). It is taken in the first semester.
  • Assessment and diagnosis in general health psychology (5 ECTS). It is taken in the first semester.
  • Assessment and intervention in children and adolescents (4 ECTS). It is taken in the first semester.
  • Assessment and intervention in adults I (8 ECTS). It is taken in the first semester.
  • Assessment and intervention in adults II (6 ECTS). It is taken in the second semester.

  • Scientific and professional foundations of health psychology (6 ECTS). It is taken in the first semester
  • Choose 3 elective courses (12 ECTS). They are taken in the second semester.
  • Internship I (12 ECTS). It runs from January to June.

Objectives of the internship

Compulsory professional internships carried out by the student in specialized centers.

The internship addresses general and specific skill sets of the master's degree, supervised by an advisor from the external center and by a professor-advisor from the university.

During their time at the internship center, the student has an advisor who supervises and monitors the activities they carry out there.

In the internship seminar the academic advisor conducts individual and group follow-ups. The contribution of the diversity of experiences enables the student to build knowledge, and integrate practice and theoretical reflection.

Master's Degree Thesis

The master's thesis is an integration of the knowledge acquired throughout the master's degree and comprises writing a document consisting of a set of explanations, theories, ideas, reasoning and assessments on a specific subject chosen by the advisor and the student. The objective is to foster the application of the skills and knowledge acquired in the rest of the subjects of the master's degree, as well as to facilitate the development of the skill sets of the subject. It is conducted in the final phase of the curriculum and is compulsory. It must be carried out individually and under the supervision of the assigned advisor. The master's thesis will conclude with a defense, in which the student must present their work publicly before an assessment committee.

  • Knowing how to integrate knowledge.
  • Making informed judgments and reflecting on the social and ethical responsibilities of the profession.
  • Knowing how to communicate —in writing— the conclusions, knowledge and arguments that support it.
  • Acquiring critical capacity regarding professional practice, on a path of ongoing improvement.

Whenever possible, it will be directly related to the internship (or, failing that, to another professional center supervised and recognized by the Blanquerna-URL School of Psychology, Educational Sciences and Sport). There are four types:

  1. Carrying out a contextualized case study in the institution or health center where the internship has been conducted or is being undertaken. Instructions for drawing up the study can be found in Appendix 1.
  2. Preparing a research report based on empirical data following the format of a scientific article. Instructions can be found in Appendix 2.
  3. Carrying out a systematic review or meta-analysis on a subject specific to general health psychology.
  4. Proposing an assessment procedure or intervention program of interest to general health psychologists (e.g., a psychological intervention, a web platform, an audio-visual production of interest to general health psychology, an assessment tool, etc.).

(12 ECTS, 1st semester of the 2nd year)

Work on the final master's thesis will be monitored through tutorials with the professor-supervisor.

The assessment, according to the explicit skill sets of the module, will take into account the adequacy of objectives and methodological design, the suitability of the topic of study and the context, as well as the follow-up performed from the seminar space (group tutorial) and individual tutorial. Through the systems set up for this purpose and in the time laid down by the School, the student will have to assess the module. This assessment is part of the teaching-learning process and is crucial for the development of the subject, given that it will help the faculty who teach it to improve the quality of the teaching plan.

The presentation of the project (formal aspects), the quality of the theoretical references, the analysis work and the final proposal duly argued and presented will also be assessed. Lastly, for the assessment of the master's thesis, the presentation and defense of this thesis will also be taken into consideration.

The assessment of the master's thesis will be weighted as follows:

  • Master's Thesis Director's Report: 50%
  • Academic work and oral defense assessed by an assessment committee: 50%

The assessment committee will comprise two PhD professors and will consist of a 10-minute presentation and an oral defense of the committee's comments and questions. The committee will sign an official defense report and each advisor will be responsible for signing the final report for the academic secretariat weighting the two assessments.

In the event that the student fails the master's thesis, they will be able to present it in the second call. In the event that they fail the second call, they will have to re-enroll in the subject.

Application process

University master's degrees are official degrees awarded by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, in accordance with the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the guidelines set out in the Bologna Declaration. To access the official master's degree, you must hold an official Spanish university degree, or a degree from another country that is part of the European Higher Education Area. Access to master's degree studies is regulated by Royal Decree 822/2021, of 28 September.

These studies are also open to students with a degree issued by an education system outside the European Higher Education Area, who do not need to have it approved, provided that the level of training is equivalent to that of an official Spanish degree and that the degree gives access to graduate studies in the country of origin. However, admission does not in any case imply the convalidation of the degree or any other type of recognition beyond allowing the student to access master's and graduate studies at the University.

Enrollment formalization:

Enrollment formalization is the final procedure to obtain a place in the master's degree:

The date of enrollment formalization is communicated individually to the person concerned and can be done online.

After this, they have two business days to pay 50% of the total cost of the credits for which they have enrolled, by bank transfer or using a barcode at the bank; the remaining 50% is split into nine monthly installments, from October to June, payable by direct debit using the bank account indicated at the time of enrollment (Instructions for sending the signed SEPA document to Blanquerna).

Alumni of official qualifications from the School are given a 15% discount on the enrollment fee (non-cumulative discount) if they enroll full time and for all the credits that the qualification offers. Prices are updated each academic year. Once enrollment is complete, the amount paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.​

General conditions for enrollment:

Students who are admitted can choose between two forms of enrollment, depending on whether they already qualify for university admission:

Conditional enrollment: Students who have not yet obtained a bachelor's degree and who require a maximum of 9 more credits and/or the thesis yet to do can apply for this. For conditional enrollment, the student must be enrolled for the outstanding credits for their bachelor's degree.
Unless the student has passed the bachelor's degree giving them access, they will not be able to defend the thesis and, therefore, will not be able to obtain the master's degree.
To be eligible for this option, the person concerned must sign this information document in which they agree to the particularities of conditional enrollment.

Final enrollment - Final enrollment is when the person concerned has completed the admission pathway for the university master's degree.

When a student enrolls, a contract for the provision of teaching services is formalized between the student and the Blanquerna Foundation, which is legally binding from the time of payment. Payment includes the corresponding insurance and, for students under the age of twenty-eight, compulsory academic insurance. If a student declines to take up a place, he/she will lose in full any amount he/she has paid.

The student accepts the rules for the use of computer services established by the Blanquerna Foundation. The student's personal data will be included in an automated file under the responsibility of the Blanquerna Foundation, so that this contract can be formalized and fulfilled. Students should note that their data may also be used to inform them about the future activities of the Foundation, or for the institution to send them publications.

In accordance with the provisions of Organic Law 15/1999 on the protection of personal data, students have the right to access their data to update, rectify or cancel them, or object to their use, by sending a letter, indicating which right they want to exercise.

This section is a summary of the general conditions for enrollment. It is only for guidance and therefore has no contractual value. In the event of any discrepancy, the provisions of the general conditions for enrollment specified in the receipt generated at the time of enrollment will prevail; this receipt formalizes the contract between the student and the Blanquerna Foundation; students can consult it on the intranet whenever they wish.

The School cannot guarantee that a course will be available if the requirement for a minimum number of enrollments is not met. In this case, the amount paid for enrollment and pre-enrollment will be refunded in full.

Foreign students

Documents and procedure:

The School reserves the right to ask candidates with qualifications outside the EES for a letter from their university, embassy or consulate to certify that their studies enable them to pursue a master's degree or graduate studies.

Students are responsible for having all the official documentation necessary for their stay in Spain while studying at the School. Applicants can ask for a pre-acceptance document attached to the pre-enrollment receipt to initiate applications for visas or scholarships or carry out any other administrative procedure. Under no circumstances does this document guarantee a place if all the access and admission requirements are not met. Once applicants have been accepted and enrollment is complete, they can request a letter of admission from the Academic Secretary, if required (they will have to pay the corresponding fees).

Course fees are paid in installments without any interest. At the time of enrollment, 50% of the total cost of the credits for which the student is enrolled must be paid*; the remaining 50% is split into nine monthly installments (from October to June) payable by direct debit.

Gender perspective

As the European Union points out, gender equality is not only a matter of social justice but also affects the results of teaching and research. Promoting gender equality in research and innovation is one of the European Commission's commitments, and it supports the explicit integration of a gender perspective in Horizon 2020 projects. However, this recommendation is often poorly understood and misapplied. Various documents are presented here with a view to contributing to a better understanding and application of the gender perspective in teaching and research.
