Scientific evidence demonstrates that maternal lactation is the optimum food option for babies, has a positive effect on the promotion of healthcare, the prevention of illness and contributes to the reduction of health imbalances. For this reason, the low rates of maternal lactation globally, which are related to social, economic, educational, institutional and political factors, are a vital question for public healthcare. Being aware of the importance of lactation and initiatives and polices to promote it from different areas and institutions of reference have revealed the lack of basic training in different healthcare disciplines dedicated to the care of the mother during lactation.
The qualification of Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Practice in Breastfeeding and Lactation, is a professionalising programme designed for healthcare professionals who wish to improve and expand their knowledge, skills and aptitudes when caring for the woman and infant during lactation. The objective being aimed at is an improvement in the quality of care for both groups by substantiating interventions with the best scientific evidence available.
