Pediatric oropharyngeal dysphagia

Swallowing is one of the most complex functions that humans perform. Considered as a functional corticobulbar network, it begins before birth, needs correct coordination with the somatosensory system and the musculoskeletal structures of the stomatognathic apparatus, and requires the progressive acquisition of skills according to the stages of the child's development.

An impairment in the swallowing process can lead to the presentation of oropharyngeal dysphagia with an incidence in pediatrics of around 25%. The etiological distribution is very varied, as is the presentation of the clinical picture.

Current healthcare models are based on prevention, which is why evaluation, diagnosis and early intervention are essential for the correct development of the pediatric patient.
